More evidence that Japaneseies are crazy

As if any further evidence was needed... I watched one of the last movies in that DVD set which was called "Pom Poko." It was about tanukis (raccoon dogs) who started a war with humans when the humans destroyed their forests. Ok, as if that's not weird enough, as I was watching the movie I started to notice that all the tanukis had BALLS! Yes that's right, every single frickin' cartoon tanuki had a pair of little balls. "Why, why, why!" You might think to yourself as you're wathcing this movie, "why would anyone make a movie about cartoon raccoons and then draw nuts on all of them?" Well, I had to do a little research, but here's what I found out (there are quotes from actual Japanese newspapers).

"Tanuki don't usually carry bottles of sake, but the statues are correct about their biology in one important detail: testes size. Rather than being used as an impromptu drum, as Japanese folklore would have it, the scrotum is large because of high levels of competition among males for females. This means that they copulate very frequently -- and need large testes. Also, according to folklore, tanuki can change shape at will. Despite their playful nature, tanuki are wild animals and should never be kept chained up like in the photo above."

Needless to say, I was grossed out in a matter of minutes (after I realized that the raccoon nuts weren't going to go away) and stopped watching the movie. But then later I was watching My Neighbor Totoro and I noticed something else... THE NEKO-BUS HAS NUTS TOO! Good crappy Japan, what are you thinking?
