ok, well, i'm not sure if anything can beat matt's tanuki evidence, but i thought this was funny. just got it in my inbox this morning about upcoming festivals in the area:

"March 28th: Dorouchi Festival (Hosaka's Asa Shrine, Haki Town) Otherwise known as the Haki Mud Festival, this festival, which datesfrom 1692, originally began to honor the God of Soil for contributing to the food cycle. Beginning at 12:00 pm, the local men begin their liquid diet of beer and sake, eventually one of the half-tanked willbe chosen as the Mud Diety. The lucky Mud Diety then gets chased around town by packs of kids who pelt mud at him. The more mud that sticks to the Mud Diety, the better the crop is supposed to be.
