baseball season

sweet, it's baseball season again. not that i'm a huge baseball fan or anything, pretty much i don't follow anything except UH baseball. but they're coming off a great season last year, first time they've been in the regionals in a LONG time and they were eliminated by eventual NCAA champion Oregon State... so nice year eh?

so why do i get so excited about baseball season? hmm... not quite sure, but here are some guesses:

1) Sports are fun - okay sure, but as far as sports go, baseball isn't really the kinda sports action i like. for one thing, they hold the ball too long, that takes all the sport out of it. i mean, that's too much control that one person has over the game. so yeah, football, well at least they can pass as well, so that's okay. lacrosse, same thing, you hold the ball and run? what's that? cheat. i much prefer volleyball and tennis, you don't have all that much control of the ball (or at least not for a long time). plus, baseball is more like a series of plays instead of a complete game, i prefer more continuous sports like soccer. also, baseball is a bit more of a skill game than an athletic sport, y'know, like baseball players don't really need to be great athletes (in general), but they need to be skilled (and power doesn't hurt either). when i was younger i actually really liked playing baseball (i think i even protested soccer because i wanted to play more baseball), but i stopped because my coaches were mean and i always played outfield and at melemanu park there were swarms of gnats that viciously attacked me all practice long. one great thing pretty specific to baseball though... are the coaches. the signals, the anger, the outbursts. awesome. sure basketball coaches get thrown out of games too, but in baseball... i mean, there's the play (that everyone can see), then there's the call, then out of the dugout comes a rampaging coach, violently yelling with arm flailing at a stoic umpire, who lets him go for about 20 seconds while the anger stews... and then... and THEN, pumps his arm, you're outta here! haha, lots of people think baseball's pretty slow, which sure it is, but when the action happens it's exciting man, and you can't even look away because you don't know when the action's gonna happen. of course you wait for the batter to drive the ball down the 3rd base line and then we all cheer, but you gotta keep your eyes open the whole time, otherwise you'll miss a steal or a balk or whatever, so yeah, it is exciting. in conclusion, reason #1 = 25%

2) Baseball season is the last half of the academic year - could it be that i'm equating baseball season with the end of school? possibly, it's really the only sport that fills the void after march madness until the end of the school year and even goes into the beginning of summer. which is how i started watching UH baseball, because after basketball season was over there was nothing to watch! so once baseball season starts i know the end is near, therefore, reason #2 = 15%

3) I'm so proud to be a UH alumni - YEAH RIGHT!!! HAHAHA!! the very funniest part of that reason is that the baseball stadium is right across the SPA building so i walked past all of that everyday, yeah, does not make for perfect memories. reason #3 = 0.0000000%

4) Lazy weekend game - perhaps baseball season instead brings back memories of when i was young and had baseball games and potlucks on fun-filled weekends. or even when i wasn't playing and i went to my sister's softball games and ate sunflower seeds and played in the dirt. or, perhaps a little more recently, it reminds me of hanging around the dorms watching the game from the bedroom window with nothing really to do and no stress really. or sitting at home on a sunday and watching baseball in the afternoon after morning nfl with nothing to do but wait for summer. yup, reason #4 = 20%

5) Jim Leahy and Pal Eldredge - yeah definately, since there ain't that much going on in the game for about 75% of the time, that gives Jim and Pal ample time to talk story, like old hawaiian man talk story. like grandfather talk story. plus they're very very old so it's fun, and they say dumb stuff. and everytime the ball hits the roof of the stadium they read and answer a baseball trivia question. it's just fun, i couldn't imagine watching the game with any other announcers. reason #5 = 30%

6) there ain't nothing else on = 10%

okay, that was fun, and i wrote that whole thing during only 2.5 innings of the UH v. georgia southern game, haha, imagine what i can accomplish throughout the whole season!
